MusicScopes – Cumbrian in New York State

Many years ago when i was but a much younger man, there was a great song out called “Calling all the Heroes” by It Bites. Anyway i got a few of their albums and what i thought were a pop band developed into a really interesting progressve Rock band before the usual implosion.

Then about 2 years later i was in a record shop in Bold Street in Liverpool and they were playing this song and i thought “IT Bites” so i asked the guy

“Eh Mate whose dat your playin?”

“Dats Frank Dunnery la”

“Boss Song mate”

“just got da CD in “

“Oh i’ll have some of that ,how much mate?”

“24 quid , its a japenese import”

“Its good but not that good! – (i was in the process of buying a house at the time so money was tight”

Anyway moving forward a few years, i was lucky enough to go on holiday to California ( last of the international playboys!) scouring through a shop in Los Angeles on the last day before flying back home i thought i would treat myself to a few CDs. Looking through the rack i came across an album by a Francis Dunnery …. could it be the same one i heard all those years ago (well 2) it was called Fearless. So i snapped it up put it in my bag and started to travel all the way back to the Uk.

Eventually we arrived home after a day of delays and horrendous travel via that London Village airport (Heathrow). As i was emptying the bags out popped the CD, so i thought why not put it on and listen to it. First song was called “American Life in the Summertime”… quite apt i thought especially as the first words were

“I just had to get out of Los Angeles Man!!!!”

Since then i feel that there is some kind of weird cosmic connection between us (caution stalker alert!) so imagine my surprise that whilst searching through i found his website and note that he has continued to release music and has branched into many other areas including astrology. Now i don’t believe in all this astrology stuff ( i’m a typical Librian in that respect) but i really like the idea of having a song for the month, although i don’t think that Garth Brookes is my type of music. But hey i’m going to find the song and see if it means anything to me.

For everyone else please check the link and see what song August has for you…

A really interesting article about the way that the ConDems are still going to look after their own. If anyone thought that the attack on public services and public spending was about the deficit reduction please think again. Its ideological, we don’t want to pay for public services unless they can be delivered by private businesses who can make a profit!

BBC News – Boycott threatens Sats test chaos

BBC News – Boycott threatens Sats test chaos

Well done to all those teachers who have got the balls to stand up to  one of the most pointless testing regimes invented.

The tests add no value to the children being tested, they are only done for the benefit of the school and so that the govt can produce its league tables. 10 and 11 years olds are getting stressed out about SATS, teachers ramming home the point that they need to revise , need to learn more, get better results , your future rests on it.

More effort should be spent in preparing Year 6 pupils for the transition needed and the change in learning styles that occur at Secondary school.

Can you tell that i am a parent of a Year 6!

Still Flying?

Following on from yesterdays post, today the skies returned to normal. Restrictions have been lifted and the sea blue skies have been crisscrossed with the milky white tracks of the aircraft industry.

It was strange to be out today and notice how many people were actually looking up at the sky in wonderment at the vapour trails. It was almost like it was the first time that people had seen flying machines.

But the question that has to be asked in light of all the backlogs and the stranded holidaymakers… Will this stop people travelling by plane! When you think about what has happened over the past couple of years that has impacted on air travel it does make you think if anyone would ever fly again. We had the increasing threat of terrorism in the air, we’ve have a massive increases in fuel costs, we’ve have a global recession and finally we have had an erupting volcano.

Every time something comes along the media sound the death knell for air travel and yet after a couple of months things return to normal and passenger numbers increase.

Will a prolonged natural disaster such as the exploding volcano really make a long term difference to the way that we travel.  I don’t think so …. but…Is this the Earths way of telling us about global warning, is this the Revenge of Gaia!

You have been warned

Ash Ridden Sunsets

P7250197

Well not quite if i’m honest, i thought we would get some really spectacular sunsets with all the Ash that is supposed to be in the air. However i’ve been really disappointed, clear blue skies all day …no vapour trails…evening sunsets slightly more muted by clouds.

Anyway here’s one i prepared earlier…taken in Scotland in July looking out from Poolewe… beautiful

Back to the grind

No matter the time and effort invested it is inevitable the mask will crack, letting little beams of the hidden self escape into view.

Twitter

Does anybody really use this software or is it just one of those things that sound good but actually isn’t.

Can’t imagine why i would want to know where someone is or what they are eating!

Is it just me1
